Mini Embroidery Frame: A Family of Hedgehogs

A small piece of embroidery depicting a mother hedgehog and three baby hedgehogs in a line, in a light blue oval frame

The story for these tiny cuties begins back in 2024, when I was looking for some small embroidery hoops - the kind that keep the fabric taut as you sew - for a different project (which will be getting its own post eventually, so stay tuned for that). What I mistakenly ordered, however, was a set of tiny frames of assorted shapes for finished embroidery pieces! Frustrating, but of course I wasn’t going to let them go to waste!

Since then, I’ve been giving people gifts of miniature embroidery pieces, set in these frames. Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of the first two I made, but I can show you this most recent piece, which I made as a present for my mum’s birthday earlier this month.

Within this particular frame, measuring just 6cm across at its widest, is a scene depicting a mother hedgehog taking her three babies (or ‘hoglets’) out for a walk. This was inspired by a moment in David Attenborough’s Wild London documentary from the beginning of this year (go to timestamp 43:02 for this part).

My favourite part of making this one was sewing all those tiny spines - some of the ones on the babies are only a millimetre long! The frames come in natural wood colour, so I gave this one a coat of sky blue paint, my mum’s favourite colour and a match for the little flowers at the top and bottom edges. I then attached the frame to a key chain so that it could be hung up.

Enjoyed this? Watch this space for some of my other sewing projects! In the meantime, why not pick up a needle and sew your own tiny critters?

Happy Crafting!
